Success of Spain in Davis Cup (English & Spanish)

DAVID, FELI, FER, MARCEL. After the victory of yesterday, today we could talk about many things, but for me the most important is to magnify these four players who, as a team, have achieved two of the most important feats as a Spanish tennis team: winning in the U.S. and in Argentina. They did it mainly because they always put the team’s interests above their own. As captain, you know that these players will not fail you, and that you can trust them one hundred percent. This decade belongs to them, they shine when they represent their country, they give everything in every round, and when they arrive to the confrontation in good shape they are very competitive. This is all the audience asks for, sometimes you can lose but, when you arrive sharp to the Davis Cup and you have the quality, you give the greatest joy.

We all won yesterday because of them. I could not watch it on TV and I did not have internet, but thanks to the phone, a mini i-pad and the twitter messages of Pedro Pérez, I could follow the match as if I was watching it, and I felt so pleased, so proud, so Spanish, that I got pretty excited in the solitude of my couch, watching those gadgets at the same time that I was recalling moments, images, as if I was living it. I was so happy for them that I went to sleep late but with a smile on my face.

What this team has achieved is unprecedented: to beat the U.S. in their country, an almost impossible mission; but the unity of this group of players that from 2005 have been always fighting is another great victory. Feli was crucial in Argentina, David won in Barcelona but he deserved an epic victory and he got it yesterday, Fer and Marcel were a new couple and for sure a great support from the bench. These victories are not a coincidence, you must create a special energy and all have to push in the same direction, for that reason my last message is to Albert and his team, they know how hard it has been, the tensions at some moments, the difficult decisions… but how nice is to participate in something so big! Congratulations to all.

With these victories, Spain keeps setting the standards in the tennis industry, and this is a reward for the clubs, tennis schools, groups of competition, coaches, and all who collaborate in the development of players, and who should continue working in that way in order that Spain remains being the benchmark in the next decade.

Finally, a mention of the Americans; his tennis is in decline, the USTA with all its financial potential is trying to find solutions but it is not getting results, the clubs system is disappearing because each apartment complex or resort has tennis courts where people play a lot but there is no competition and, therefore, there is no players development. What it is producing players is the American university system; three players from the U.S. Team of this past weekend were college players. In this aspect the Americans are superior to all the other countries, because the possibility of combining tennis competition and education is scarce in Europe. I also have to mention the tremendous facilities at these universities; the court where the confrontation was played was the basketball stadium of the University of Texas. With this potential, the short-term solution involves improving the level of competition of the universities for them to have again many players among the top. Soon I will write about tennis at the American universities, a subject that I find really interesting.

Éxito Español en la Davis

DAVID, FELI, FER, MARCEL. Tras la victoria de ayer, hoy podríamos hablar de muchas cosas, pero para mí lo más importante es engrandecer la historia de estos cuatro jugadores, que como equipo han conseguido dos de las gestas más importantes del tenis español: ganar en USA y en Argentina. Lo consiguieron principalmente porque siempre antepusieron los intereses del equipo a los suyos propios. Como capitán, sabes que estos jugadores no te fallarán, y que puedes confiar en ellos al cien por cien. Esta década es de ellos, se crecen cuando representan a su país, lo dan todo en cada eliminatoria, y cuando llegan en buena forma son muy competitivos. Como público, lo único que pedimos es esta entrega, aunque pierdan, pero por supuesto cuando llegan bien a la eliminatoria y tienen tanta calidad, entonces es cuando nos dan las alegrías más grandes.

Gracias a ellos, ayer ganamos todos. Yo no tenía tdp, ni internet, pero entre el teléfono, un mini-ipad, y los mensajes en twitter de Pedro Pérez, seguí el partido como si lo viese, y me sentí tan dicho, tan orgulloso, tan español, que me emocioné en la soledad del sofá, mirando esos aparatillos, recordando imágenes, momentos, como si lo estuviese viviendo. Me alegré tanto por ellos que me dormí tarde pero con una sonrisa.

Lo que ha conseguido este equipo no tiene precedentes: ganar a USA en su casa, una misión casi imposible, pero la unión de este grupo que lleva desde el 2005 dando la cara es otro gran triunfo. Feli ya fue clave en Argentina, David ya ganó en Barcelona, pero fuera se merecía una victoria épica y ayer la consiguió, Fer y Marcel fueron pareja nueva y seguro gran apoyo desde el banquillo. Estas victorias nunca son casualidad, se debe crear una energía especial y empujar todos en la misma dirección, y por ello mi último mensaje es para Albert y su equipo de trabajo, ellos saben lo mucho que les ha costado esta victoria, los nervios vividos, las tensiones, las decisiones… pero qué bonito es poder participar en algo tan grande. Felicidades a todos.

Con estos triunfos España sigue marcando las pautas en la Industria del Tenis, y es un premio para los clubs, las escuelas, los grupos de competición, los coaches, y para todos los que colaboran en la producción de jugadores y que deben seguir trabajando para que en la próxima década España siga siendo el referente.

Para terminar, una mención a los americanos; su tenis está en declive, la USTA con todo su potencial financiero está intentando buscar soluciones pero sin resultados, el sistema de clubs está desapareciendo debido a que cada conjunto de apartamentos o resort dispone de pistas de tenis donde se juega mucho, pero no se compite y, por tanto, no se produce. Lo que todavía está produciendo jugadores es el sistema universitario americano; tres jugadores del equipo de USA en esta eliminatoria eran jugadores universitarios. En este aspecto sí que los americanos nos superan a todos, el poder combinar el deporte de competición con la educación es la asignatura pendiente en Europa. Cabe mencionar también las tremendas instalaciones de estas universidades, la pista donde se jugó la eliminatoria era el estadio de básquet de la Universidad de Texas. Con este potencial, la solución a corto plazo pasa por mejorar el nivel de competición de éstas para volver a tener muchos jugadores entre los mejores. Pronto escribiré sobre el tenis en el sistema universitario americano, tema que considero muy interesante.
