The Yin and Yang from Rafa, the wise warrior (English & Spanish, El Mundo Orbyt 12/6/12)

Sitting in front of my PC I start wondering what to write about Rafa and, although the finals have just ended, I really don’t care about the result. What comes to mind is admiration, lots of admiration. I have just said that I will not write about this final but about Rafa, or better said, about the two Rafas, about his Ying and his Yang, or him being a Gemini, write about his two twins.

I knew him when he was 15, when he won his first Future at the Academia Sánchez-Casal. He was an adolescent then and at first I was impressed by his well-set head but got nevertheless struck by his differing glances: of the fighter on the court and the angel out of the court. During the Davis Cup stage I got to know him more profoundly and, as a true Gemini, his two personalities had developed more and were even more distinguishable; both conquered me. Rafa the warrior, the fire, the passion, the fighter that prepares for battle like a Samurai, for him each match is as if it were the last one. He will do whatever his condition will allow him to do in order to achieve the objective, which is to give no options to the opponent, to die for some values.

But he does not die; he wins and by winning, a transformation occurs. It’s as if the warrior is liberated, if knowing that by having another battle he will get to relax. Then his other glance appears, the other Rafa: reflective, humble, thinker, the child he has inside, the wise.

On Wednesday Albert Costa, Carlos Moya and I watched his game against Almagro and at the end we stopped by the changing room to greet him. There he was, laying on the stretcher of his loyal squire, Maimo, who was placing some ice and taking good care of him, and next to Carlos Costa, with his BB smoking, and the other Toni, the smiling strategist. Rafa had the light of victory in his glance, that small touch of happiness after a job well done. I looked at him and it seemed as if the Junior of 2005 was now there, as if time had not passed and he had just won his first semifinal. He asked us and we talked about the game and it seemed as if he wanted to be reaffirmed on his own perception. Even if we added our titles, those of us present have not even won half of what he has earned. Nonetheless, he paid much attention, as if we were university professors, absorbing every comment. I have learned through my observation that he feeds from everything; he fills the tank by listening, reinforcing himself with loyalty to his group, yet is nevertheless always attentive to any comments that may help achieve his goal. The warrior learns, the reflective one listens and thus stores information for a future battle.

Another memory that I recall is during the Davis qualifying rounds with me. I asked him if during the game he would prefer that I talk to him about what was happening (some players don’t like this), and his answer, when still only 19, was: “Everything can be seen better from the outside and, since I trust you with your experience, I’m sure you will see it better than me because I’m nervous and what you tell me will help my objective, which is to win”.

In this short article I wanted to show you the two Rafas. If I had to choose, I would not know which one I’d prefer, both are great: the methodic and passionate warrior or the reflective, humble and analytical, the wise one. The Ying and the Yang merge to create a war machine with clear values and always with the objective to improve to compete. For this reason, this Rafa cannot leave anyone indifferent; he is a mirror, a role model, passion. Each time I am more devoted to him. Be it one or the other, or both at the same time, to me he is brilliant. The samurai, the wise, the warrior, the humble, the passionate, that’s how I see him.

El Yin y el Yang de Rafa Nadal, sabio guerrero

Me siento aquí delante del Pc y empiezo a pensar en qué escribir sobre Rafa y, aunque acaban de terminar los cuartos de final, a mí me da igual el resultado, lo único que me viene a la cabeza es admiración, mucha admiración. Acabo de decidir que no voy a hablar de esta final, sino de él, o mejor dicho de sus dos Rafas, de su Yin y su Yang. O, como buen Géminis, de sus dos gemelos.

Lo conocí con 15 años cuando ganó su primer Future en la Academia Sánchez-Casal, era un adolescente, me impactó primero lo bien amueblada que tenía la cabeza, pero me chocó la diferencia de la mirada de guerrero en la pista a la de angelito fuera de la pista.

En la etapa de Copa Davis lo conocí más a fondo, y como buen géminis sus dos yos se habían desarrollado más y estaban más marcados todavía, me conquistaron ambos.

El Rafa guerrero, el fuego, la pasión, el luchador que se prepara para la batalla casi como un Samurai el día de la batalla, para Rafa cada partido es como si fuese el último, y  hará todo lo que sus condiciones le permitan para conseguir el objetivo, que es no dar opción al contrario, sino morir por unos valores.

Pero no muere, gana y, al ganar, se produce la transformación, es como si  se liberase del guerrero, como si el saber que tendrá otra batalla le relajase,  y aparece la otra mirada, el otro Rafa, el reflexivo, el humilde, el pensador, el niño que lleva dentro, el sabio.

El miércoles estuvimos viendo su partido contra Almagro junto a Albert Costa y Carlos Moya Al acabar pasamos por el vestuario a saludarle, allí estaba tumbado en la camilla de su fiel escudero Maimo poniéndole hielo, cuidándole con tacto, a un lado Carlos Costa, con su BB humeando, y al otro Toni, el estratega sonriente. Rafa en su mirada tenía la luz de la victoria, ese puntillo de felicidad tras el trabajo bien hecho. Lo miré y me pareció que allí estaba el junior del 2005, como si no hubiese pasado el tiempo y acabara de alcanzar su primera semifinal. Nos preguntaba y hablábamos del partido, y parecía que quería reafirmarse en su lectura; si sumamos los títulos, los que estábamos allí no hemos ganado ni la mitad que él, pero él prestaba mucha atención, como si fuésemos catedráticos, absorbiendo cualquier comentario. He aprendido observándolo que él se nutre de todo, se llena el depósito de escuchar, se refuerza  con su fidelidad a su grupo pero siempre está atentísimo a cualquier otro comentario que le pueda servir en pos de su objetivo. El guerrero aprende, el reflexivo escucha y así él almacena información para alguna batalla futura.

Otro recuerdo que me viene, en su primera eliminatoria de Davis conmigo, le pregunté si prefería que le hablase en el partido de lo que estaba pasando (algunos jugadores no les gusta) y su respuesta fue con 19 años: “Desde fuera todo se ve mejor, y como confío en ti por tu experiencia seguro que lo ves mejor que yo que estoy nervioso, y lo que me digas me ayudará en mi objetivo que es  ganar”.

He querido mostraros en esta pequeña columna a los dos Rafas, si tuviese que escoger no se a cuál de los dos prefiero, ambos geniales, el guerrero metódico y pasional, o el reflexivo humilde y analizador, el sabio. El yin y el yang se fusionan uno con el otro creando esa máquina de guerra con unos valores claros y siempre con el objetivo de mejorar para competir. Por ello, este  Rafa no deja a nadie indiferente, es un espejo, un modelo a seguir, una pasión. A mí me tiene cada vez más entregado. Ya sea uno, el otro, o los dos juntos, me parece genial.  El samurái, el sabio, el guerrero, el humilde, el pasional, así es como yo lo veo.
