The story of Sanchez-Casal to open in China

After 15 years the Tennis Academy of China Sanchez-Casal is a reality in the historic city of Nanjing with the temples of six dynasty’s surrounding it, is the biggest challenge for the future of ASC.

I’m sitting here surrounded by mountains finishing the presentation for the Chinese press and the numerous audience of the Tennis Academy of China Sanchez-Casal. On my left there is Mrs. Li, President of the China Tennis Association, and on my right there is Mr. Yan from the Samaranch Foundation. The General Director of Sports from the Jiangsu province, Mr. Chen, is giving his speech about values, education, opportunities, and competitiveness. It is the third speech that conveys the same message, and listening to this key people in China I realize that our mission and years of dedication to others are the goal of any institution. I’m thinking that with a half-smile on my face.

As I look around, something is moving inside of me, similar to the feeling you have when you are going to compete, and you feel a fire in your belly. I feel confident, proud, challenged, and competitive, I feel that the dream is finally coming true and that I am part of it. I am ready for the battle. After 15 years of talks and negotiations, the day has arrived.

Sanchez-Casal is going to open the new Asia-Pacific Academy.

Today starts a new battle, I also know that this match is not going to be easy, no one before has succeeded in this amazing country, everyone who has tried has failed, and here I am starting a new project with uncertainty but also with lots of knowhow, energy and a great team.

Since I founded Academia Sanchez-Casal back in 1998 with Sergio Casal, our goal was to set-up a school in Europe (Barcelona), in the USA (Naples) and in Asia. My first trip to China was to Chengdu to do some clinics and after I went to Beijing to talk with the Beijing Association in 2001, after a few trips looking for sites and some time trying to convince them to send us their best player to try to make it competitive for the Beijing Olympics; he came to train but after 4 months he had to go back to defend his province. For that reason after the second time it happened it was impossible to close a deal since their expectations were to win locally with the province in Nationals instead to improve to arrive to Olympics. We could train him only for 3 months and the rest of time he was in China; it was a pity but after 2 years the collaboration ended.

The year after I started conversations with Singapore, an amazing island that had all the ingredients to become a Tennis Hub for the Asia-Pacific region. I got really involved, prepared a project, went there and presented it to all the different departments; it arrived in the government hierarchy to the Minister of Sports, he was really keen. They also visited Barcelona with 2 delegations. But at the end the urban department turned it down. Later in the year and trough our kind agent Mrs. Ho, we got into conversations with Shanghai, the governmental bus company was responsible of running the incredible facilities where the Masters took place, they were looking for partners. I made one more trip and put lots of energy but at the end nothing happened again. In the meantime we also visited Japan but the site didn’t have the requirements needed.

Singapore people found out about our conversations with others and they called again, this time it was serious, we even had a local government partner and the operation looked almost closed, but again the urban department offered a ridiculous price one more time. The Singapore government had the vision to become a sports hub in 2030 and the Academy was in their plans but the Urban Department just didn’t understand how difficult is to run this business. Not even for building a Four Seasons would we pay that amount for the land. My idea, efforts, trips and visits were not materializing, but I had to keep going; tennis taught me that you have to keep fighting even in the adversity, you have to be resilient and you may turn the match back to your side. Opportunities like trains pass close to you and you have to decide if seizing them or not. Suddenly in 2012 we closed a very good deal and opened our American operations base in Naples, Florida. My people thought that I was crazy but I decided with the support of my wife to move to the US to start a new operation.

At that moment I had two proposals on my table again, the first one in Shenzhen, which was not going to be possible because of the differences between our models, as they did not offer the option to open our high school. Thailand made a really good offer but when we got to investment / funding they backed up. And Shanghai again, this time they contacted us trough J.A. Samaranch and the Samaranch Foundation, but after a site visit and before looking even at numbers things again didn’t work. This time I was devastated, I started to doubt that we could one day find the good fit. But I was so busy with the USA business, permits, licenses, applications, and building the club there that I was not worried at all, I had enough on my side, my team of people in Naples was not stable, I had to really work hard to settle things and move along.

In the meantime in Barcelona we had the most horrible news, the soul of the academy Antonio Hernandez left us, we all were in shock. Things were uncertain, but like if his soul stayed around, the team fought hard, they succeed, and the last 2 years there were really impressive results, that allowed me to focus on the US project. And I want to say a few words about my team, my people, they had for sure been inspired by Antonio, but they showed me and I suppose as well to themselves, how capable they are, and they can be proud to have taken ASC to its present level. I have to say that after 2 years I still miss him a lot, and before taking decisions I always ask myself, what would Antonio do? His legacy is inside all of us and he can be very proud wherever he is.

Life always goes around and after a few months J.A. Samaranch calls me back. ”We have to go to Nanjing! This is our chance! It’s an amazing venue! The government wants to make an offer!” After all these years I never thought that this could be the good one, I was not excited but my friendship with the Samaranch family and my respect for the Samaranch Foundation convinced me to make the trip to China from the US, around the world for 2 days to check another site.

We visited the facilities, met with the politicians, and this time the feeling was different, Mr. Jiang really wanted to reach an agreement, he was really keen to make a collaboration agreement, negotiations started, followed in Barcelona and then through the great work of the staff of the Foundation we clarified all details, finally agreed on terms, had to write the contracts, so many difficulties again but when people want to do it at the end things happen. And looking back I’m so thankful to the Samaranch Foundation, without them I would not be here today. I have to take a moment to talk about the legacy of Mr. Samaranch in the Chinese Sports, the respect everyone has for him. Being grateful is something that they have here, and even many years after he left us, we can say that today the Samaranch foundation is the vehicle from the Chinese Government to support unprivileged through sports.

Samaranch is probably one of the key actors in sports in China this century, and I’m proud as a Spaniard that they are so thankful to him. In Spain we should learn how to thank the people that made a difference. Big lessons learned.

Juan Antonio’s son is following his footsteps and he arrived the day after the presentation for support, thanks for the trip, for the help, for the partnership to help others.

I have seen many clubs and academies in my years as a player and I can say that I’m so fortunate because this facility has everything needed to be successful: 8 indoor courts, 14 hard courts, 7 red clay courts, 4 natural grass, club house, gym, lodging, restaurants. The mountains around the facilities are magic, you can breathe the history; we are surrounded by all the castles and the palaces of the six dynasties that reigned China for more than 700 years, when Nanjing was its capital. The Tennis Academy of China Sanchez-Casal is inside the University and around the Nanjing Institute of Sports where they have a research and innovation center focusing on development of athletes, so I can say that this time we were lucky, very lucky.

The past goes through my head, very fast, Shanghai, Singapore… And all the difficult negotiations are all past, we are here and I can start to work, my expression is the same than the one you have when you finish a match and win, it has the light of the victory. April 2016, 15 years after my first trip, today I can say we have a presence in the 3 continents. Tennis Academy of China Sanchez-Casal is a reality.

This past March we started a campaign on TV and media called “Intercontinental program”, which is UNIQUE in the tennis world; 2 continents, 2 cultures, one school Sanchez-Casal. Today I am already thinking in the next campaign; 3 continents, 3 cultures, one school Sanchez-Casal.

I turn to my right and see my team, 4 coaches have transferred their lives to China. I look at them with admiration, 4 professionals that have decided to leave their comfort zone and move to another country, to start a new project, to fight the uncertainty and work hard. One more time people is the key to go ahead and pass barriers, and I look at them and feel their loyalty, their respect, their fighting spirit, they have all my support and I believe that they will make Sanchez-Casal a success because they know but more than anything because they care for the others, and that makes a big difference.Sanchez-Casal after almost 20 years is located in 3 continents; our mission of giving opportunities in tennis and education expands to a new venue for the future. These 4 coaches have an incredible opportunity to grow, to improve and to learn, and I hope they will take it, like many others did in the past in the USA or in Spain.

The energy generated in Education is key because you write stories and you are part of them, today they know us because we have put 20 top 100 in the Pro Tour, 5 of those top 5 with more than 10 slams. And not to mention names Murray, Kuznetsova, Sanchez, Ivanovic, Hantuchova, Monaco, Dimitrov, Serna, Muller, Gavisbhily, and many others. These stories of success are great but the ones I love the most are the ones from our students that want to play college tennis and write their stories with an amazing education and hard work, more than 150 of our students have entered college tennis teams. Being part of the lives of these kids give us energy to continue, being part of their lives keep us young and our journey in this world makes sense, because helping others to live better is always rewarding. Today we can bring our philosophy to a new culture and in some years we will review if we were able to write more stories.

I always tell my coaches that we are part of the circle of life and that is not changeable, that stays, we make a difference in people and we accompany them, we are very fortunate.

At this moment I’m in the flight arriving to Florida and I can share with you that all the efforts during all these years putting together the centers, working hard, giving everything for the kids, is worth it and I know that this tough match is going to be remembered, because we start again and will write stories that have a positive impact on others, and this is priceless, is what give us the energy to keep fighting and win the matches. There is no better example than after so many lost sets, 15 years later ASC wins the match.

Judy Murray keeps believing in Sanchez-Casal

More than 10 years after she brought Andy to Barcelona, Judy Murray came to @Ascflorida to support Ali Collins.

After the incredible journey in Indian Wells, this week I received the visit of Judy Murray, she came to see her protégée Ali Collins, student athlete at Sanchez-Casal Florida. We had a great practice together and she gave Ali some amazing advice. I enjoyed so much the memories that she had regarding the journey that Andy spent in Barcelona and how she remembers every step of it; the tournaments, the fights, the moments. I took one of her comments and kept it in my special book of memories: «Andy a few years ago realized how important was training in Barcelona and  understood everything that at the moment he didn’t believe was so important. Today he believes even more that the work he did was key for his game». It was rewarding and also fulfilling.

Furthering Andy Murray’s experience at our Academy, we have just launched a TV campaign on the Tennis Channel featuring Ali Collins, a protégée of Andy’s mother, Judy. Ali hails from the same home town as the Murray family and is a student-athlete at our Naples campus. She has ranked as high as 119 on the ITF Junior Circuit and has also represented Great Britain in the Junior Fed Cup. She is a perfect example of the successful training framework that our system features to help emerging stars balance the demands of the tennis calendar with their studies.

 

We have been organizing the first 25000$ Ustaprocircuit event, as well as a prior wildcard tournament, it has been a total success thanks to the help of the sponsors like @BMWof Naples, @Headtennis, and many others, the level of players has been amazing and they show outstanding professionalism. I have to congratulate our young players, specially Victoria Emma because she won a match in both singles and doubles together with Ali Collins.

 

And I’m going to present another success story at the Sanchez-Casal Academy at our Naples location, her name is Victoria Emma, a student-athlete who has trained with us since she was eight years old. Last November, she Victoria was named Junior of the Year by the USTA Florida and was ranked number eleven in the country by the Tennis Recruiting Network for the Class of 2017. Victoria is currently a junior and has recently committed to the University of Florida, securing what promises to be a bright career in college tennis. Her success is another example of how combining tennis development with an on site coordinated education can benefit young tennis players by providing them wider complete and fully designed options for the future.

As the founder of the Sanchez-Casal Academy, last week I was proud to announce the launch of our Intercontinental Program, which combines our High-performance Tennis Training with quality, fully accredited High School studies in both Naples, Florida and Barcelona, Spain. Both are build upon and incorporate rooted with the renowned Spanish Tennis System, which has benefitted world class players such as Murray, Kuznetsova, Dimitrov, Monaco, Hantuchova, Bovina, and Miller. Lots of requests of information that shows how innovative and special is this program.

Twenty-five years ago when I was competing on the ATP Professional Tour (where I reached a career high of number one in doubles and number seven in singles), I realized how difficult it was to both train for tennis and receive a quality education as an elite player in juggle studies with training and competition. It was then that I began to embrace the idea of an academy where junior players could both reach their tennis goals as well as pursue their studies; and, where the tennis facilities, residence and school would be in the same place allowing the students to optimize their time and be provided with  the stability that tennis requires. Now, Sanchez-Casal offers two campuses in place that make this a reality. Additionally, the two venues and our Intercontinental Program has the additional benefit of providing an international cultural exchange. It is a one-of-a-kind program. Sanchez-Casal is the only tennis academy in the world to have a center in Europe (Barcelona, Spain) and in the United States (Naples, Florida). Rafael Nadal, one human more. (English & Spanish) El Espanol 10-14-2015

Sitting here in front of my computer, scanning 15 years of articles and blogs, reviewing my memory of TV and radio commentary and my awareness of Nadal as an amazing junior player, I realize this is the first time in almost two decades I write of a different Rafael Nadal. And it is the first time I don’t need adjectives to talk about Nadal’s many gestures and habits or speak with admiration.  What I say may seem ordinary.  I’m going to write about a normal person. Throughout his career, Nadal has been an example, a leader in everything he has done, a mirror to measure others, ourselves and himself.  Now, it seems that for the first time Nadal has forgotten much of what’s in that mirror – all that energy has evaporated and become vulnerable.

I’d like to talk about the reasons for this.  Being away from the Tour I may miss some nuances.  I can point to technical reasons, as some of his shots have changed due to difficulties of mobility or for tactical reasons.  Since returning from his latest injury, Nadal has tried to be much more aggressive, matches were shorter and his superior endurance matters less.  The result is that Nadal’s play allows his rivals to stick more to their game without getting as tired.  This causes Nadal doubts that he never had, affecting his focus, the objective, the MENTAL aspect.  It is as if he can’t accept the new situation, and the result is the opposite of what has happened throughout his life.

Look at what happened in NY at the US Open.  He was up 2 sets in the match against Fabio Fognini, with breaks and advantages. Breaking three serves in the third, fourth and fifth set, and then losing.  This is something that has never happened to him before. Critics are asking him to change his coach, skeptics say he should to quit, and the disbelievers say that Nadal will never be the same. My opinion is that he must face the why, what makes him doubt.  He should sit down to think, dissecting the issues to the bone without any avoidance.  No thinking about the past or in the future, or opponents’ games.

He needs to truly look himself in the mirror, to dissect where he is today in the present . what he doesn’t have that he used to have and all the things he has now that he didn’t have in skills?  and then adjust the tactics and mental, CAN HE DO THAT? that ANALYSIS and honest assessment in the PRESENT?  without being encumbered by history and expectations? can he be so present and so brutally honest about that assessment? with his current team around him.

Because he is so about habit and family and loyalty and friendship and history, that perhaps he cannot, and perhaps without someone to help be PRESENT, those around him can’t do that with him.

They are about the history, they are his history and his family, for him personal and professional are the same in many of his people.

AND, they have expectations.  They are an entourage.  He carries them.  He is responsible for their livelihood.  This is always a problem when someone hits bumps who is the star – media, movies, sports – if he stop – what does everyone else do?  So it’s a lot to carry when you need to be really selfish to have a good 2^nd act – to adapt – when they represent your history and have expectations of the future and you carry those with you.

The expectatives betray you and don’t let you think on your tools (TECNICAL), in how to manage those (TACTICAL) in how much time you can use them (PHYSICAL) and the quality on how to use them (MENTAL).

Now, Rafa has the same problems as the rest of the humans. He has become normal and only the ones that manage to put together those four factors at the end become exceptional.

Me siento aquí delante del ordenador  y repasando en mis recuerdos estoy sorprendido  porque se trata de la primera vez que escribo de Rafael Nadal. Sé que no debo buscar adjetivos ante una gesta,  ni hablar de admiración. Ademas sé que lo que voy a decir parecerá banal, pero voy a escribir de una persona normal. De alguien que ha sido durante toda su carrera un ejemplo, un referente en todo lo que ha hecho, un espejo en el que mirarse. Pero sorprendentemente parece que por primera vez a ese modelo se le hubiesen olvidado todas sus virtudes,  y que toda esa energía se hubiera evaporado y se hubiese vuelto vulnerable.

Me gustaría hablar de los motivos, pero el estar fuera del circuito no me permite profundizar en el por qué. Podría buscar motivos TÉCNICOS, ya que alguno de sus golpes ha cambiado por las dificultades de movilidad, o motivos TÁCTICOS, pues al regresar de la lesión se volvió mucho más agresivo, y eso afectó al FÍSICO, ya que se acortaron los partidos. El resultado es que Nadal permite ahora a sus rivales que ellos hagan más su juego sin cansarse tanto, y eso le produce dudas que nunca tuvo, afectando al foco, al objetivo, al aspecto MENTAL. Es como si no consiguiera aceptar esa nueva situación, y el resultado es el opuesto de lo que le ha pasado toda su vida.

Verlo en Nueva York perder ese partido (contra Fabio Fognini) ganando 2 sets, con break y ventajas después. Romper tres saques en el tercero, cuarto y quinto set y perder, es algo inaudito. Los críticos le piden cambio de ‘coach’, los escépticos que lo deje, y los incrédulos  opinan que nunca será el mismo. Mi opinión es que debe enfrentarse al porqué, a lo que le hace dudar, sentándose a pensar, hurgando en sí mismo, acercando el cómo es con el cómo  se muestra, sin pensar en el pasado ni en el futuro, ni en ser perfecto, ni en los demás.

El necesita de verdad mirar a ese espejo para ver donde está hoy en el presente, ver que no tiene que tenía antes a nivel TECNICO,  y entonces ajustar su TACTICA y su MENTAL Acorde a esas nuevas características. Puede hacer ese análisis y ser honesto consigo mismo en el presente? Sin ser influenciado por la historia y las espectativas? Puede de verdad analizarse y ser brutalmente honesto  en el presente con el equipo que tiene en este momento a su alrededor?  Porque si todo él, respira hábitos, familia, lealtad e historia, será muy difícil lograrlo sin la ayuda de alguien experto en ese presente. La verdad que no se si los de alrededor pueden hacerlo como en el pasado en vez del experto.

Todo el team son la historia con él, son su historia y a la vez su familia, para lo personal y para lo profesional son lo mismo, igual que la mayoría del resto de su gente.

Y ellos tienen expectativas también. Son su entorno. El los protege, los carga a sus espaldas. Él es responsable de sus vidas. Ese es siempre el problema cuando alguien se encuentra algún bache o algún obstáculo y es una estrella en el cine, el periodismo o en el deporte. Si el parase, que hacen los demás? Es muchísimo peso encima cuando debes ser egoísta para tener un segundo capítulo y adaptarte. Ellos representan su historia y tiene expectativas de futuro también y las cargas van directas a tu  consciente  o a veces a tu inconsciente, en definitiva el MENTAL.

Las expectativas traicionan y no te dejan pensar en tus herramientas (técnica), en como ordenarlas (táctica), en la cantidad de tiempo que puedes usarlas (físico) y en la calidad de cómo usarlas (mental).

Ahora, Rafa tiene los mismos problemas que el resto de los humanos. Se ha vuelto normal y solo los que consiguen juntar esos cuatro factores mencionados logran ser excepcionales.

Emilio Sanchez: “La nomination de Gala Leon a fait l’effet d’une bombe””

Rien ne va plus en Espagne. Après avoir été rétrogradée en seconde division et perdu son capitaine Carlos Moya, l’équipe nationale de Coupe Davis doit aujourd’hui accepter la nomination de Gala Leon (ex 27ème joueuse WTA) en tant que ramplaçante de l’ex-numéro 1 mondial. Une nouvelle qui continue encore aujourd’hui de déferler la chronique. Pour mieux comprendre la situation, Tennis Trotteur a fait appel à Emilio Sanchez Vicario, ancien n°7 mondial et ex-capitaine de Coupe Davis (vainqueur en 2008 lors de son capitanat).

Comment avez-vous vécu la défaite de l’Espagne contre le Brésil et la relégation en seconde division ?

J’ai tout vu à postériori car ils ne retransmettaient pas les matchs aux Etats-Unis (où il dirige une académie) mais cela m’a fait beaucoup de peine… Quelques fois, les choses se compliquent subitement et je pense que c’est ce qu’il s’est passé. Ceux qui voulaient être là étaient blessés, les autres n’ont pas voulu jouer. Au final, tout a reposé sur les épaules de joueurs qui n’avaient peu ou pas d’expérience en Coupe Davis et encore beaucoup à apprendre. La loi du sport est parfois cruelle. C’est pour cela que cela fait si mal. L’équipe est allée au Brésil sans ses meilleurs atouts et sans ceux qui ont hésité puis ne se sont finalement pas laissés convaincre… Je pense qu’il faut simplement féliciter les joueurs qui ont répondu présent.

Carlos Moya n’a pas souhaité continuer à la tête de l’équipe après cette défaite. Comprenez-vous sa decision?

A moitié. Je sais qu’il y a mis beaucoup d’espoirs et d’envie et entre les changements de génération, une combinaison d’éléments défavorables et des résultats qui n’arrivent pas, la tâche devient vite compliquée. Sans connaître tous les détails, cela me surprend quand même qu’il n’ait pas voulu continuer un an de plus car selon moi, les challenges et les difficultés devraient être une source de motivation supplémentaire en plus d’une bonne chance de montrer qu’il est capable de ramener l’Espagne au plus haut niveau. Mais je comprends tout à fait que cela ne lui suffise pas car l’ampleur de la tâche est désormais beaucoup plus importante.

Comme Carlos Moya, vous avez également été capitaine de Coupe Davis (2005 à 2008). Quelle aurait été votre réaction dans une situation comparable à celle-ci?

C’est difficile à dire. Etre capitaine reste un poste compliqué. Quand on a investi toute son énergie pour atteindre un objectif, c’est extrêmement décourageant de voir que le travail effectué n’a servi à rien pour convaincre les joueurs. Mes débuts de capitaine n’ont pas non plus été rose. Je me souviens que ni Carlos Moya ni Juan Carlos Ferrero (tous deux ex-numéros 1) ne voulaient venir. J’avais dû former une nouvelle équipe plus jeune et attendre que les joueurs mûrissent. Au final, cette option était la bonne, j’ai pris ça comme une opportunité.

La nomination de Gala Leon à la tête de l’équipe a beaucoup fait parler. Comment jugez-vous son arrivée à ce poste?

L’annonce a fait l’effet d’une bombe nucléaire. Soit la décision a été mûrement réfléchie soit pas du tout. Ca dépend de quel côté on se place. Pour moi, il n’y a pas que l’avenir de l’équipe qui est en jeu. Le plus important reste l’avenir du tennis espagnol. Elle est maintenant à la tête de toute la machinerie du tennis du pays: responsable des Jeux olympiques, des jeunes, des centres d’entraînement…

Est-elle légitime ? Beaucoup auraient préféré voir une ancienne gloire du tennis masculin à ce poste. On attendait notamment Juan Carlos Ferrero…

Je ne peux pas dire grand chose. Il faudrait demander au président d’étayer les arguments qui ont fait pencher la balance en faveur de Gala. Lui seul connaît les vraies raisons. S’il pense que tout l’avenir de tennis national doit reposer sur le travail d’une seule et même personne, c’est qu’il y a réfléchi. Avoir à la fois les casquettes de capitaine et directrice sportive représente un travail énorme mais c’est aussi une nouvelle façon de voir les choses. L’autre serait de revenir à une forme plus traditionnelle et d’avoir un capitaine d’un côté et un directeur sportif de l’autre. On verra comment ce changement influencera l’avenir. En ce qui me concerne, je n’ai été que capitaine mais je pense qu’il est bénéfique de donner toutes les responsabilités à la même personne.

Gala va malgré tout débuter avec un gros handicap. Elle va devoir convaincre beaucoup de gens avant de pouvoir commencer à travailler. Si elle a les compétences nécessaires, je ne vois pas pourquoi elle n’y arriverait pas. Réussir ce défi dépend de la volonté et de l’énergie qu’on y met. Il faut être à 100% et encore, parfois, cela ne suffit pas. Il faut savoir rester cohérent dans ses choix, être présent, et surtout, il faut vivre le moment pour toujours y croire. Pour tout ça, il n’est pas nécessaire d’être une légende.

En tant que directrice sportive, Gala Léon avait pour mission de trouver un nouveau capitaine. Sa propre nomination ne sonne-t-elle pas comme un aveu d’impuissance de la part de la fédération?

Un aveu d’impuissance ? Je pense plutôt que c’est un grand coup de la part de la Fédération. Si elle arrive à gérer les difficultés qui vont se présenter, Gala a devant elle une superbe opportunité. Elle n’a rien à perdre.

Une belle opportunité qui n’est pas du goût de tout le monde. Toni Nadal a été durement critiqué après avoir suggéré que la présence d’une femme dans les vestiaires n’était pas appropriée. Il a également appuyé le fait qu’elle ne connaît pas les joueurs. Etrange pour une directrice technique, non?

Ce qu’a dit Toni est naturel. Elle vient d’arriver et n’a aucune expérience du tennis masculin. Mais elle a pratiquement un an pour faire ses armes et cela joue en sa faveur. Cela lui donne du temps pour connaître les joueurs. J’imagine que les critiques sont plus dirigées vers le président qui n’a pas consulté les joueurs avant de prendre une décision. Quand un joueur est numéro 1 de l’équipe, il est logique qu’il soit aux courant des décisions qui sont prises et qu’il ait son mot à dire. Il faudrait peut être comprendre ce qu’il s’est passé entre les deux clans pour que le dialogue soit rompu, surtout quand il s’agit d’une décision aussi importante qui va influencer l’avenir du tennis national.

Pour en revenir à Gala, l’idée qu’une femme dirige le tennis espagnol me paraît très innovante, c’est un très grand challenge pour elle. Le tennis féminin a toujours été pionnier en matière d’égalité, tant sur les prize money que sur les conditions de jeu. Il ne manquait plus que de franchir une nouvelle étape en donnant de nouvelles responsabilités aux femmes, chose qu’Andy Murray a très bien fait en demandant Amélie Mauresmo de devenir son coach. L’Espagne suit maintenant le même chemin. Ces décisions sont fondamentales pour montrer au monde entier que le fait d’être un homme ou une femme importe peu du moment que la personne possède les qualités requises pour bien faire son travail. L’avenir nous dira si Gala les a, et j’espère sincèrement que ce sera le cas. J’aimerais qu’elle réussisse.

Ce pseudo débat sexiste ne cacherait-il pas en réalité des problèmes bien plus profonds au sein de la fédération ?

Il y a beaucoup de pressions. Avant, le Président prenait des décisions en ayant concerté les joueurs. Il occupe son poste depuis bien longtemps, a fait des promesses et s’est vu promettre beaucoup de choses. Le résultat n’est pas très favorable. Le problème aujourd’hui est que la fédération n’est qu’un petit microcosme qui reste opposé à de puissants groupes qui n’hésitent pas l’affronter sur plusieurs fronts: les sponsors, tournois, la Coupe Davis… Au final; Il ne reste pas beaucoup de part du gâteau à répartir. Il est très difficile de prendre des décisions dans ces conditions.

Pourquoi ne pas prêter plus d’attention à l’avis des joueurs ?

Les objectifs de la Fédération sont ce qu’ils sont, et très souvent, ils sont assez flous. J’aurais d’ailleurs aimé qu’on pose la même question au Président (José Lui Escañuela) et qu’il soit sincère en avouant si oui ou non, il est réellement confronté à ces groupes et pour quelles raisons. Son travail devrait consister à tous nous réunir, nous regrouper pour prendre les meilleures décisions concernant l’avenir du tennis nationnal. A l’heure actuelle, il a déjà pris sa décision. Gala peut rompre les conventions et écrire un nouveau chapitre si elle fait bien son travail. Mais les résultats ne se feront pas sentir avant quelques années. En attendant, nous nous devons d’apporter notre soutien. Le futur du tennis est en jeu. Peut-être que tout cela est effectivement la conséquence d’un problème bien plus profond que de savoir qui est le capitaine de l’équipe. Il est certainement temps d’analyser en profondeur la raison pour laquelle les joueurs ne désirent plus participer à la Coupe Davis même s’ils ne sont pas loin de la fin de leur carrière. La Fédération devrait trouver des solutions, faire participer la Fédération Internationale qui elle-même devrait apporter une analyse profonde et trouver des moyens, notamment économiques, pour que les joueurs s’investissent beaucoup plus dans la compétition. Mais cela fait partie d’un autre débat tout aussi intéressant…

Pensez-vous que la Fédération essaie de gagner du temps en attendant de nommer un autre capitaine ?

Non. Je pense que c’est une décision définitive. Pourquoi présenter quelqu’un maintenant s’il n’y a aucun match jusqu’en juillet 2015? Si ce n’était pas définitif, cela n’aurait aucun sens. Créer tout ce tapage pour gagner du temps serait machiavélique. Je crois plutôt que cette décision a été prise pour montrer aux différents groupes qui veulent diriger que ces décisions ne leur appartiennent pas et que le joueur est libre de choisir par lui-même s’il veut participer ou non à une rencontre. Ce genre de situation peut toujours empirer et causer davantage de dégâts. Les joueurs ont chacun de de nombreux sponsors et s’ils viennent à en perdre, de nouveaux problèmes surviendront.

Au problème de capitanat s’ajoute celui de la relève. Nadal, Verdasco, Lopez, Ferrer… Tous ont donné beaucoup pour apporter à l’Espagne le Saladier d’argent. Aujourd’hui, les jeunes semblent bouder la compétition. Avez-vous une idée de la raison de ce changement ?

Je ne pense pas que ce soit vraiment le cas. Les jeunes veulent jouer la Coupe Davis mais il faut leur apprendre à le faire. Ils sont encore en formation et doivent apprendre à gagner dans ce genre de compétition. Au Brésil, cela s’est joué de peu. Ils n’ont pas eu de chance. Les jeunes joueront toujours la Coupe Davis.

Comment imaginez-vous le futur de cette équipe?

A court terme, pas très bon. La seconde division est presque aussi difficile que la première. Et si les piliers ne reviennent pas dans l’équipe, il faudra continuer à apprendre. On verra combien de temps les jeunes mettront pour gagner en maturité, mais je suis certain qu’ils y arriveront. Il faudra juste être patient.

L’Espagne peut-elle revenir au plus haut niveau?

L’Espagne retrouvera son rang lorsque les meilleurs joueurs nationaux du moment réintègreront l’équipe, ou quand les jeunes se seront améliorés. Pour être compétitif lors de la Coupe Davis, il faut au moins avoir un top 10, un Top 20 et un excellent double. Si il n’y a rien de tout cela, comme ce qui nous est arrivé cette année avec un top 20, un top 45 et un nouveau double, alors l’équipe devient vulnérable. Et si en plus, cela se passe à l’extérieur, face à deux membres du Top 5 en double qui jouent ensemble depuis dix ans, face à Bellucci qui joue comme un joueur du top 20, la défaite est toujours envisageable. Mais il ne faut pas dramatiser. Il suffit de regarder Federer, qui avant, décidait de jouer la Coupe Davis tous les 36 du mois et qui a finalement décidé cette année d’en faire un de ses objectifs principaux. Il amène la Suisse en finale, avec deux top 5. La même chose s’est produit pour la France qui compte un joueur du Top 10 et deux du Top 20. La Coupe Davis est une compétition incroyable. Ceux qui n’y participent pas se mordront un jour les doigts de ne pas avoir répondu présent. Moi-même, je m’en veux encore aujourd’hui d’avoir fait l’impasse sur la compétition pendant deux ans par simple fierté. La relégation en deuxième division était le pire scénario qui puisse se produire. Mais revenir au premier plan sera une immense victoire pour ceux qui y parviendront, surtout si ce sont des jeunes.

Cómo viviste la derrota de España ante el Brasil y su paseo al grupo II mundial?
La vi a posteriori, ya que aquí no retransmitían el partido por TV, pero lo viví con mucha tristeza… A veces, se tuerce todo y en este caso pienso que fue así. Los que querían ir se lesionaron, los demás no fueron, y al final, los que fueron son muy jóvenes y aun no tienen la experiencia, aún deben aprender. La ley del deporte, a veces puede ser cruel, por eso cuesta tanto y la máxima del deporte es que si no valoras al contrario y además le sumas las dificultades del momento, las condiciones se igualan y te pueden ganar o puedes perder. España fue a competir sin los que se descartaron por calendario, sin los que querían ir y no pudieron por estar lesionados y sin los que estaban dudosos pero no se dejaron convencer… Para mí, hay que felicitar a los que fueron.

¿Entiendes la decisión de Carlos Moya por no seguir como capitan del equipo? La entiendo a medias, sé que le puso toda la ilusión y ganas, pero entre los cambios generacionales, las circunstancias adversas y los resultados que no se ven reflejados se vuelve muy difícil el compromiso. Sin saber detalles, me sorprende más que no estuviese otro año porque los retos y las dificultades deberían ser una motivación, y una demostración de que es capaz de devolver a España a donde debería estar. Sin embargo, entiendo que no le compense ya que ahora el camino es todavía más duro.

Tu también fuiste capitán. ¿Qué harias hecho tú con lo que está pasando?
Des de tan lejos, es difícil de decir porqué no sé los detalles pero es un puesto complicado. Desanima mucho ponerle ilusión, ganas y que tu trabajo no sirva de nada para convencer a la gente. En mi época, yo empecé mal también porqué ni Carlos Moyá ni Juan Carlos (ex-números 1) querían ir y tuve que hacer un cambio generacional y esperar a que los jóvenes aprendiesen. Lo interpreté como una oportunidad.

La nominación de Gala Leon da mucho que hablar. ¿Cómo ves su llegada al frente del equipo de Copa Davis? Como un bombazo atómico. Desde la distancia solo puedo decir que, o ha sido una decisión muy valorada, o muy poco, depende de cómo lo mires. Para mí no está sólo en juego el resultado del equipo, lo que es más importante es el futuro del tenis español. Es la responsable absoluta de todo, Olimpidas, juveniles, centros de alto rendimiento…

¿Es legítima para ti? Yo poco tengo a decir, habría que preguntar al presidente los motivos que han inclinado la balanza. El sólo sabe el porqué. Si él cree que todo el tenis nacional debe colgar de Gala, sus motivos tendrá. Capitanía y dirección deportiva es mucho trabajo, pero es una forma de hacerlo, la otra, sería igual que antes, un capitán para la Davis y un director deportivo para el día a día. Veremos cómo va la nueva propuesta, en mi etapa yo fui sólo capitán pero pienso que es mejor que el capitán lo dirija todo.
El reto que yo veo, es que Gala empieza con un gran handicap, va a tener que ganarse a mucha gente para poder empezar a trabajar. Si tiene la capacidad, no veo porqué no pueda hacerlo bien. El tener éxito en un cargo como este, depende de las ganas y la energía que le pongas, dar el 100% a veces no es suficiente, hay que ser coherente, estar presente y sobretodo, creer en ello y vivirlo, y para eso, no necesitas haber sido una gran leyenda.

Gala León tenía que encontrar a un nuevo capitán. Al final ella fue nominada. ¿No será una prueba de debilidad por parte de la Federación? Debilidad? Pienso que es un órdago a la grande de poder, no de debilidad. Gala tiene una gran oportunidad si sabe gestionar las dificultades, no tiene nada que perder.

Toni Nadal fue criticado y tratado de machista despues de haber dicho que la presencia de una mujer en los vestuarios resultaba rara. También añadio que ella no conocia personalmente a los tenistas. ¿No será extraño para una directora técnica? Lo que dijo Toni Nadal, es natural. Ella es nueva y sin experiencia en el mundo del tenis masculino, pero la parte que juega a su favor es que jugarán en un año, así que tiene tiempo para conocerlos. Imagino que las críticas van más hacia el “Presi” por no haber consensuado antes con ellos. Cuando alguien es el número uno del mundo, le gusta que le comenten este tipo de decisiones y formar parte de ellas.Quizá, habría que ver qué ha pasado antes entre ellos para que no se comente nada de la decisión más importante del futuro del tenis español en los próximos años.

Referente a que una mujer lidere el tenis español, me parece muy innovador y un gran reto para ella. El tenis femenino internacional siempre ha sido pionero en conseguir igualdad: premios, competiciones profesionales…sólo faltaba este paso que empezó Andy con Mauresmo y ahora España con su team. Me parece genial para enseñar al mundo que da igual si eres hombre o mujer si tienes las capacidades que hacen falta. El tiempo nos dirá si ella las tiene, pero yo espero que sí, me gustaría mucho que lo hiciese genial.

¿Este debate no escondería algo mucho más profundo de lo de que estamos hablando? Hay demasiadas presiones, el presidente ya debió escuchar a algunos jugadores antes, tomó decisiones, lleva una vida allí, hizo y le hicieron promesas, y al final el resultado ha sido el que ha sido. Además, nuestra industria es muy pequeña, hay varios grupos muy potentes, todos ellos muy enfrentados a la federación en varios frentes: sponsors, torneos, poder, copa davis… Al final, poco pastel a repartir, y es muy difícil decidir. Parece que la Federación toma decisiones sin prestar más atención a los jugadores. Los objetivos de Federaciones son los que son, y muchas veces, son grises. A mi me gustaría que le hiciesen la misma pregunta al presidente, y fuese sincero en decir si está enfrentado a esos grupos o no y el porqué. Su labor debería ser el colaborar con todos, unificar, sumar, multiplicar… Y al final, decidir qué es lo mejor para el futuro del tenis. Él, ya tomó la decisión y Gala puede fracasar o romper moldes y marcar una época si lo hace bien. Eso, lo sabremos en unos años, hasta entonces, hay que apoyar, el futuro del tenis está en juego. Aun así, quizá todo esto es la consecuencia de un problema que va más allá de quien esté como capitán, seguramente es el momento de analizar en profundidad por qué los jugadores no van a la Davis en la última etapa de sus carreras, la federación debería buscar soluciones, involucrar a la federación internacional que también debe hacer un profundo análisis y reinventarse involucrando a los jugadores en todo y principalmente en la parte económica, pero todo esto da para un segundo debate muy interesante.

¿Piensas que la Federación intenta ganar tiempo para encontrar al nuevo capitán? Para nada, pienso que es una decisión definitiva. Para qué presentar a nadie si no hay partido hasta julio 2015? Si no es definitivo, no tiene sentido hacerlo, crear este revuelo para ganar tiempo sería maquiavélico. Pienso que ha sido más el querer mostrar a los diferentes grupos que quieren dominar, quién manda en realidad y que quien quiera estar, esté y quien no, NO. Estas situaciones pueden empeorar y causar más dificultades de futuro, todos ellos comparten muchos sponsors, y si se pierden sponsors, habrá más problemas.

Además del capitan, el equipo español parace tener otro problema: el relevo. Nadal, Verdasco, Lopez, Ferrer… Todos han dado mucho para llevar la ensaladera a casa. Pero hoy, parece que los jovenes ponen mala cara a esa competición…¿tienes alguna idea del por qué? No pienso que sea así, los jóvenes quieren jugar la Davis, solo que hay que aprender a jugarla y ellos, como bien has dicho son muy jóvenes y deben aprender a ganar en ella. En Brasil no ganaron de un punto, tuvieron muy mala suerte. Los jóvenes siempre jugaran la Davis.

¿Cómo ves el futuro de este equipo ? Pues a corto plazo lo veo duro, la segunda división es casi tan dura como la primera, y si los pesos pesados no van al equipo debemos seguir aprendiendo, deberemos ver cuánto tardan en aprender los jóvenes, pero seguro que lo consiguen, habrá que tener paciencia ¿Piensas que puede conseguir otra vez el éxito que conoció durante estos últimos años? España volverá a triunfar cuando volvamos a competir con los mejores del momento o cuando los jóvenes mejoren. Para ser competitivo en Davis necesitas un top ten , un top 20 y un dobles con garantías. Si te quedas sin ello, como nos pasó a nosotros, un top 20, un top 45 y doble nuevo entonces te vuelves vulnerable. Si además juegas en campo contrario ante dos top 5 de dobles que juegan de hace 10 año, Belluci que es un top 20 de juego aunque este más bajo, pues al final puedes perder.
No hay que dramatizar, mira Federer, jugaba de uvas a peras, este año se ha puesto la Davis como meta y está en la final, 2 top 5. Francia igual 1 top 10 y dos top 20.

La Davis es un competición increíble, los que no la juegan, algún día pensaran: ¿Por qué no fui? Yo aún hoy me arrepiento de los dos años que no participé por orgullo. Bajar a segunda es lo peor que puede pasar pero subir también será un premio para los que lo logren, sobre todo si lo hacen los jóvenes.

FEROCIOUS RAFA

Ayer mientras comía con unos ejecutivos financieros, de esos muy poderosos, que manejan este mundo, y que piensan que su valor es incalculable, de que hablamos? Pues imaginar ellos de $$$, presumían  de cuantos ceros tenía cada uno, aquí les encanta eso de contar lo que valen y también hablamos  de Rafa, por supuesto. Es normal que Rafa magnetice a los deportistas, a los luchadores, pero a estos magnates? Pues Los tiene locos, lo admiran porque lo ven como ellos, gente indestructible, luchadores, seductores, gente con luz, y su admiración sobrepasa los límites, pero algo ha cambiado en Rafa y eso les atrae todavía más.

Uno de ellos me pregunta, este chico es como se le ve? Y me suelta, jugando es FEROCIOUS (feroz), y como cambia al acabar, cuando habla es humilde, dulce, como puede ser tan diferente? Vaya el ricachón, lo había clavado. Le explique mi opinión de esa mutación, que tenía la capacidad de absorber lo mejor del padre, de la madre, del tío,  de Carlos, de Maimo… Y transformarlo en energía y fuerza para la batalla. Rafa Nadal antes del parón  era un jugador espectacular, ganador, con una mirada guerrera, pero su  juego era dependiente del otro. El gran cambio vino después, la adversidad de estar sin poder hacer lo que le gustaba, le hicieron valorar lo que tenía, y a su vuelta, se ha convertido en un jugador mucho mejor, más agresivo, con una mirada casi asesina. El numero 1 le ha cambiado, le sigue yendo la vida en cada batalla, pero como buen jefe de la manada defenderá su posición con sus jóvenes rivales con todas sus armas, ahora los principios de partido sigue como agazapado esperando, sus gestos son de poderío, sabiduría, listo para las embestidas y ahí aparece ese Rafa agresivo, FEROCIOUS, no sólo ataca sino que pulveriza las bolas, y sus zarpazos obligan a recular al rival, el los persigue y los machaca a zarpazos. Saliendo de la comida no me podía olvidar de ese adjetivo, FEROCIOUS.

Pensando en la final de mañana, ningún sitio mejor que el Foro Romano para este nuevo Rafa feroz, puede ser espectacular, su hábitat natural, contra Djokovic el dotado, que debe demostrar su superioridad en el juego, él también tuvo el trono de Rafa en el 2011. Nueva batalla en la que ambos tratan de encontrar su mejor versión en la tierra. Djokovic se lesiono en Montecarlo y este Rafa agresivo  le ha costado más que otros años encontrar su tenis, pero entre los partidos de Madrid y ahora los de Roma, ya hemos visto su mejoría. Ambos necesitan la fe, la confianza que da este título y ganarle a su rival para afrontar las grandes citas.  Nadal es casi imbatible en tierra, si alguien puede ganarle ese es Djokovic, será una gran final. Veremos un Djokovic  que atacara con insistencia y la clave será ver cuánto tarda Nadal  en ver la debilidad para convertirse en el FEROCIOUS y agresivo Rafa.

Antonio, el alma de la Sanchez-Casal nos ha dejado

Ayer volví de Disney con  mis críos, habían disfrutado con su prima de dos días con los muñecos y atracciones, como en todos los eventos la salida con tanta gente se retrasó todo, llegué a casa tardísimo de madrugada, me metí en la cama. Por la mañana temprano oía el zumbido del teléfono pero no quería contestar, después visto la insistencia lo intentaba pero no se oía nada, quizás no quería oír lo que se venía encima. Al cabo de pocos minutos unos golpeos de la puerta del pequeño apartamento, sentía el miedo de que algo malo pasaba.

Abro y ahí estaba Alvarito, uno de mis  coaches, y me suelta “ha muerto Antonio” sus palabras con la respiración entrecortada retumban aun en mis oídos, no lo quiero escuchar, le miro, llevaba mucho rato llorando. Le abrazo. Para él Antonio era como un padre, mentor, amigo, lo era todo. Para mí como un hermano, un alma gemela, alguien que me entendía, que se preocupaba, ecuánime, justo, duro, cercano, amigo, emotivo. Antonio creció de familia humilde pero siempre supo destacarse, en todo era muy capaz pero con las personas era donde se desenvolvía mejor, el exigía dando, era su faceta más especial y que pocos tienen, era el coach por excelencia.

Hoy nos ha dejado, por segunda vez en 9 meses debo tomar un avión con prisas por causas tragicas, hoy día de pascua encontrar un vuelo no ha sido fácil, pero aquí estoy acompañado por Álvaro. En Naples se ha quedado también Lucas, ellos dos allí son mis manos derechas, son estupendos, pero si algo debo resaltar es que son como tú, son prácticamente hijos de Antonio, ambos son fieles, entregados, disciplinados, y sobre todo buena gente. Están destrozados.

Antonio hoy te has ido, no has dejado, estamos todos  con mucha pena, pero yo te quiero dar las gracias, por haber sido compañero, amigo, referente, por todo lo que me has ayudado, por todo lo que he aprendido, y felicitarte porque has dejado un legado muy grande, puedes estar muy orgulloso y yo contigo de los que has conseguido, lo veo cada día de cerca con Lucas y Alvaro. En la oscuridad del avión, cierro los ojos, pienso, más te admiro, mas legado y me continúan saliendo nombres de chicos a los que has tratado como tus propios hijos y que gracias a ti hoy son pequeños Antonios (Pol, Stefan, Pep, Toni, Pinito, Nano, Moe, German, Nico, Vova, Hector…. Y eso solo nombrando a compañeros, si pienso en alumnos la lista es larguísima. Esta mañana Berta, la madre de una de nuestras primeras alumnas Maria, me ha mandado el texto que escribió Garcia Márquez la semana antes de irse, Simona lo ha colgado en el Facebook de la Academia https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=643873895685105&id=370372926368538 , y puedo asegurar que es como si lo hubiese escrito para ti, has vivido, crecido, creído, experimentado, querido, lo has dado todo y lo más importante has vivido. Nos has dejado muy pronto, queríamos sacar más de ti, pero tu cuerpo no ha dado de más.

Durante muchos años él fue mi voz en la Academia, pero desde mi marcha a Usa,  había tomado las riendas en la gestión, y puedo decir que con gran liderazgo, él siempre fue el alma de Sanchez-Casal, casi defendía mas a la Academia que Sergio o yo, era el primero en ponerse en tu lugar y también en el del otro, era un ejemplo, nunca quiso figurar, pero si tirar del carro, hoy somos lo que somos gracias a él y su energía. Recuerdo nuestra última conversación hace unos diez días, decías,  estoy feliz, nunca he aprendido tanto, él siempre fue un gran coach, se había vuelto un empresario, empresario y de personas, líder total.

Su perdida es inestimable, Antonio es insustituible, ahora deberemos encontrar la motivación para seguir adelante, pero hay algo que nos dará fuerzas, su energía, sus enseñanzas y lo más importante, debemos mantener por lo que el tanto lucho. Era el proyecto de su vida, “yo me retirare aquí” decía, “esto es lo mejor que me ha pasado nunca”.

Ahora que ya no estas nos damos cuenta que tú eras lo mejor que nos había pasado nunca a nosotros, tú eras único, muchas veces me discutía acerca de la misión, me decía eso es filosofía , yo le contestaba pero si esa misión eres tú, esta hecha a medida para ti, tu das oportunidades a la gente, tú eres nuestra misión, y se reía. En nombre de todos me permito darte las gracias por habernos dado tanto, tu generosidad no tenía limites, eras un grande.

Acabo de entrar a la Academia, el panorama desolador, miro la pista 5 y te veo, te oigo, me acabo de abrazar con media Academia, Sergio, Angel, Nacho, Moe, Emilio…… el panorama es durísimo. Subo a lo q era mi despacho, y miro por la ventana, Stefan vestido de calle, en las pistas, ayudando a los pisteros, pasando la estera, ha parado de llover y ya esta secando las pistas, tu siempre eras el primero en estar ahí, seguro que de donde estés mirando estas feliz, sabes que tu legado continuará, tus hijos son como tú.

Querido Antonio, ahora me acerco a tu pista a que hablemos, me cuentes y puedas descansar en paz.

Rafa Nadal «The number one in excellence» English & Spanish (El mundo Orbyt 7/11/2013)

  Once again, I’m here trying to tell you something about Rafa that you don’t know. His match wins this week in London at the ATP Championships secure his finish in 2013 as number 1 in the world.  For me the real headline is “The number one in excellence.”  Why excellence? Because the final ranking says Rafa is # 1 in terms of ranking points, but I believe he is # 1 in terms of excellence because he is the most resilient, the leader in men’s tennis in terms of his passion, his mental dedication, his physical skill and stamina, and in how he projects himself on and off the court.  Also because of his uninterrupted professionalism, generosity, and even humility.  This level of excellence is all the more notable because he is playing in a Golden Age of tennis, against amazing competitors.  And beyond ranking points, based on all those other criteria, Rafa is the ONE.  Excellence personified.

Rafa’s is now a unique story about the journey of a champion. One player that makes it to the top of the pyramid. He had to work really hard, training for hours and years, drills and more drills, pushing his physical abilities.  On the way up he developed the technique, learned how to compete, extended his physical abilities, and strengthened his inner engine. Traveling across continents and time zones, and still pushing harder.  Many can have a good year or two, touch the trophies, and receive the glory.   But wise people always say “It may be difficult to arrive but it is much more difficult to stay.” Everyone fights for that spot, they improve, you relax, they beat you and one day the fall starts. You lose faith, you cannot recover your passion, you spiral down, the losses mount, and everything ends.

When you start to lose, only the chosen ones find the motivation to come back.  The very best and greatest of the game: Laver and Sampras.  Rafa was atop the game in 2008, but lost his position in 2009.  Several  reasons – personal and physical – made him vulnerable.  A year later, he broke past those barriers, overcame them and overcame Federer to regain the # 1 spot in 2010.  2011 and 2012 were Djokovic’s years, with Murray also in the race.  Rafa began losing, he had injuries.  Everyone began asking, will he come back?  Is he weaker?  Can he come back?  Does he have the strength, the tools and the passion to come back, having already achieved so much, with so much competition in the game?  In 2013 not only did Rafa come back, but he dramatically reworked his stance and court position on his forehand to take pressure off his problematic left knee.   Moving further into the court, Rafa now hits his forehand leaning into his right knee, rather than off his left knee from the back of the court.  As he is taking the ball earlier, his forehand is now more aggressive, raising his game to yet another level.  Rafa changed his circumstances and turned it to his advantage – he found a way to come back stronger and more aggressive, and bring himself back to his natural habitat, being number one.  No one in history has done it three times. He said this week in London “This has been by far my best year.”  It’s easy to look back and see it now, but a year ago, only Rafa believed, perhaps some fans hoped.  Rafa is so extraordinary and so humble, it’s almost expected.  But it shouldn’t be – nor should it be taken for granted.  He is one of the most extraordinary athletes in history.  We get to enjoy it.  And say thank you.  Just as he is always thanking his fans and praising his competitors.

Rafa Nadal, numero uno por excelencia

Una vez más aquí estoy intentando contaros algo que no sepáis de Rafa. Acaba de conseguir ponerse el número 1, pero para mí el título de la película seria “el número uno por excelencia”, y además ya la hemos visto varias veces. Porque por excelencia? porque lo dice el ranking, porque además lo es en resiliencia, en espíritu, en pasión, en físico, en cabeza, en como transmite, en espejo, en ejemplo…. Podríamos estar aquí resaltando, factores, valores y no tendríamos suficientes paginas para describirlo. Es el UNO.

Y lo que os quiero contar hoy es referente a las trayectorias de los deportistas. Un jugador que llega al vértice de la pirámide ha tenido que escalar muy duro, muchas horas de repeticiones, ha debido depurar su técnica, su táctica, su físico, su mente, su interior, un camino difícil que al final tiene premio, llegar arriba de todo, a la meta. Pero como dicen los sabios; “Es difícil llegar pero más mantenerse” todos luchan por ese lugar, con ello  mejoran, tú te quedas, te ganan, llega un día que empieza el declive y poco a poco pierdes ilusión, pasión y vas para abajo, al final te vuelves perdedor y ahí se acaba.

Cuando empiezas a perder, solo los elegidos consiguen motivarse y encontrar la fórmula para volver, como Sampras, Laver… Rafa después de conseguir el número uno en el 2008, volvió a perder su posición en el 2009, diversas circunstancias le hicieron bajar su nivel, pero volvió a romper los moldes, se superó a sí mismo, a su rival Federer y lo recuperó en el 2010.  En el 2011 y 2012 apareció el mejor  Djokovic, Murray subió su nivel, Rafa perdió y además se lesionó, parecía que no volvería, el tenis estaba herido sin él, pero la vida continuaba, todos nos preguntábamos si se habría vuelto vulnerable? Podría volver al mismo nivel? Tendría fuerzas? En el 2013 No solo volvió, sino que además ganó a la adversidad, cambió su juego, compenso el no poder usar su pierna de apoyo al 100% le hizo más agresivo, mejor jugador, más ganador y volvió a su hábitat, al número uno, su lugar natural. Nadie en la historia consiguió antes volver tres veces a la cima.  El mismo lo comentaba ayer “ Esta es la temporada mejor de mi vida” No me extraña Rafa, tu premio es estar donde te mereces. Ahora es fácil mirar atrás y verlo, solo tú te lo creíste, encontraste la manera  y ahí estas. Disfrútalo y gracias.

Las oportunidades (El Mundo 6/7/2013)

Ha llegado el gran momento, la gran oportunidad, el tenis español está de enhorabuena a una vez más. Empiezo por David; cuanto hubiese dado si le dicen ¡semis de Paris con Jo Wilfred Tsonga! despierta hubiese pensado, imposible, pero ahí está. Hoy es el día.  David si lo toma como una oportunidad, hace sentir al francés la dureza del partido, confía en romper la barrera psicológica de jugar su primera final, el no suele fallar con los que es superior. Si por el contrario se deja apabullar por el talento del francés, por el público local o por la falta de ritmo del sistema del francés entonces podría sufrir. Creo, deseo y espero que David llegue a la final, se lo merece. Lo de Rafa podemos hacer dos lecturas, la de la gran mayoría que piensan que ganó 7 veces, que en cinco sets es mejor y que conseguirá dominar al serbio y llegar a su octava final. Y la otra es que cuando juegan, Djokovic le encuentra sus debilidades y el serbio juega muy tranquilo. Cuando alguien sin hacer esfuerzo te domina, se deben dar circunstancias excepcionales para que  el dominado pueda triunfar, debe darse que el dominado juegue muy bien, y el dominador baje su rendimiento. Es lo mismo que le pasa a Rafa con Roger, que le hace daño aun sin querer. Esperemos que Rafa sepa esperar las lagunas psicológicas que suele tener el serbio para hacer su juego y desarbolar al serbio con su patrón. Para más dificultades, Rafa desde su vuelta y por sus molestias, increíblemente ha dado un giro total  a toda la base de su juego, nadie antes lo hizo, y menos ganado tanto y tan rápido. Antes la derecha y el revés los apoyaba en la pierna izquierda, ahora ambos golpes los da en la derecha por proteger la otra o por no sentir dolor. Eso le ha hecho tener una derecha más agresiva, jugar más adentro pero también un revés más vulnerable y menos oportunidades de abrir la pista con el cruzado. Por el contrario Djokovic con sus ataques de revés cruzados profundos obligará a Rafa a usar su pierna izquierda en el drive, eso podría acarrear quedarse fuera de zona, más dolor y más facilidad para el serbio. Lendl para adaptarse a hierba perdió casi un año y Wilander para dar revés cortado tardo 6 meses perdiendo partidos. Rafa lo ha conseguido y sin perder, vaya mérito.

Rafa el grande, el de las grandes oportunidades  debe encontrar la forma de  ser competitivo con lo que tenga y buscar la épica, ahí él en lo mental, emocional es mejor. Una final española sería un gran premio para el esfuerzo de ambos, Rafa por adaptación ante la adversidad y David por una carrera con premio final.

Rafa´s comeback (English & Spanish)

It has been more than a month since the expected and most wanted comeback of Rafa Nadal to the circuit.  Besides all the assumptions, speculations and criticisms, there was not a person in the tennis industry, including players, coaches, managers, sponsors, rivals and audience, who did not miss Nadal. Thank you Rafa, our sport smiles and it is happy for your return. You’re at your favorite event Monaco again.

Modern tennis was hurt without Rafa Nadal, it was as if it had missed his soul; to lose his top warrior, the tireless fighter beloved by everyone, the strongest, the most explosive… the tournaments without Nadal did not arise the same interest. The wait for his return was long but, like everything in life, it came to an end, and it was finally over. Rafa came back, fulfilling everybody’s wishes, and he did it on his beloved red clay, that clay that protects him, that gives him more power; what a great choice!

During all this time, when people asked me about his injury, about if Rafa would come back, I told them he would come back, and that once Rafa returned he would start winning right away. Knowing him, I knew that his warrior’s heart would not let him come back not being at 100%. Rafa Nadal cannot lose, his essence is winning, his triumphs are his fuel, he could not return to the tour to be mediocre. To lose is not in his mind, neither in his dictionary, a hesitant Rafa would not have been the player we were missing, the player with a winner’s heart.

The first week was not easy for him, he ended up losing a great final being very close to the victory. Winning is a feeling that you have to get used to, and all players feel this weird weight on themselves after some time without feeling it. However, at the second opportunity he raised the trophy in Sao Paolo, and at the third tournament in Acapulco, where he had his real test, he debuted successfully by destroying Ferrer at the final. The great Nadal was back, at least on clay court.

I had my doubts about if he would play in hard courts; indeed, I told several people that I believed Rafa would only play on clay court until he would feel totally fine. However, I was wrong; he went to Indian Wells and he started to feel the hard surface, and once more he surprised everyone by winning match after match until he met Federer at the semifinals,

killing him. It was expected a hard final for Nadal against Del Potro, who had defeated Djokovic and Murray to make it to the final. The match started with the Argentinean dominating, winning comfortably. Commentators were saying that it would be an easy job for Del Potro, who leaded the match by winning a set and with a break in the second one. But then, the Argentinean had a moment of doubt, and at that moment the tiger appeared: Nadal recovered the break, changed the match and had a tremendous come back, ending up obtaining the Indian Wells title.

Although Nadal transmitted us many things through his happy face once the final finished, his words after the match went even deeper; he remembered the hard moments, his people and especially his uncle, who was not there, and he gave us some patterns about the lessons received to face adversity. What a lesson for everybody!

The audience was happy, surprised by the comeback of our epic Rafa Nadal, the warrior who keeps fighting and waiting for his chance and, once the chance  appears, he takes it; this is his way of looking at life, we could all learn from it and apply it to the challenges that life offers to all of us.

Rafa, thanks for coming back.

La vuelta de Rafa

Hace ahora más de un mes de la esperada y deseada vuelta de Rafa Nadal al circuito, atrás quedaron suposiciones, criticas, quejas, especulaciones pero principalmente añoranzas, no hay una persona de la industria, jugadores, coaches, managers, sponsors, rivales y ante todo el público,  que no le echase en falta. Gracias Rafa, nuestro deporte sonríe, es de nuevo feliz por tu vuelta. Estás otra vez en torneo favorito Mónaco.

El tenis moderno sin Rafael Nadal estaba herido,  era como si le hubiesen robado el alma, perder a su máximo exponente, al guerrero, al luchador incasable querido por todos, su fuerza, sus explosiones  de energía  fuera de lo normal, los torneos sin él no tenían interés. Y la espera se prolongó, pero como todo en la vida llega a un final, se acabó la espera. El sueño de todos se cumplió, decidió volver, en la tierra que tanto le gusta, que le protege, que le da más fuerza, que gran elección.

Durante este tiempo cuando me preguntaban acerca de su lesión, de si volvería, yo les respondía que volvería y que volvería a ganar enseguida. Que su corazón de guerrero no le permitiría volver a medias, que si lo hacía volvería al 100 por cien, conociéndole no podía ser de otra manera. Rafa Nadal no puede perder, su esencia es ganar, su gasolina son sus triunfos, es como es, gracias a sus triunfos y no podía volver para ser mediocre, perder no esta en su doctrina, ni en su diccionario, un Rafa dubitativo no hubiese sido el Rafa que añorábamos, debía volver el Rafa con alma de ganador.

La primera semana le costó, terminó perdiendo una final ganadísima varias veces, pero a ganar hay que estar acostumbrado y el llevaba tiempo sin sentirlo y a todos les pesa. Pero a la segunda ya levantó la copa en Sao Paolo, y a la tercera en Acapulco donde tuvo su prueba de fuego y como la resolvió, destrozando a Ferrer en la final. Había vuelto el grande Nadal , al menos en tierra.

Yo tenía mis dudas de que jugase en dura, es mas a varias personas les dije que solo jugaría en tierra hasta sentirse bien, pero me equivocaba, se fué a Indian Wells y empezó  a sentir la dureza de ese suelo, y una vez más sorprendió al mundo entero, no solo probó la dura sino que fue adelante, ganando partido tras partido hasta las semis contra Federer al que pulverizó, lo dudaban?. La final se presentaba dura contra Del Potro que había ganado a Djokovic y Murray. Empezó dominando Del Potro, ganaba cómodo, los comentaristas decían que era un paseo, se adelantó tb en segundo con break, y ahí tuvo una pequeña duda, entonces apareció el tigre, soltó su zarpazo, recupero el break y cambió el partido llevándose una vez más la copa de Indian Wells.

Su cara de felicidad era para enmarcar, pero si con algo me quedo es con sus declaraciones,  dicen todavía más de él, se acordó de los momentos duros, de su gente y sobre
todo de su tío que no estaba con el, además  nos dio pautas de cada una de las enseñanzas recibidas para aprender a saber sufrir ante la adversidad. Vaya lección para todos.

El público estaba  feliz, los presentes seguro salieron de la pista con esa incredulidad de haber vuelto a ver al Rafa Nadal épico, al que lo da todo esperando su chance y siempre está cuando aparece, esa manera de enfocar la vida como un cazador, como un guerrero, podríamos todos los demás aprenderla para poder aplicarla a  los partidos de la vida.
