No cometamos el error de los argentinos

Se acerca la gran final de la Copa  Davis entre España y Argentina, que se celebrará en Sevilla. España es la favorita indiscutible, pues ha ganado las últimas 20 confrontaciones que ha jugado en casa. Pero ya sabemos que los favoritismos no ganan los partidos, y la experiencia lo demuestra tal y como pasó en nuestra victoria del 2008, que por motivos que ya sabéis es la que llevo en mi corazón. En la final de ese año, con la baja de Nadal, Argentina era más favorita que hoy lo es España. Los argentinos no supieron conjuntar sus energías  y ello les acabó traicionando, mientras que las nuestras no se sumaron sino que se multiplicaron, consiguiendo que las posibles diferencias de nivel (su equipo tenía dos top ten y nosotros tres top 25), se igualaran.

Lo bonito del deporte es que casi siempre es justo, y así se demostró en esa final. En los momentos clave del partido, el estar tan dispuestos para la batalla con nuestras energías conjuntadas nos dio la confianza necesaria y nos aportó la suerte para, en el punto clave del doble (y de la eliminatoria), el mejor jugador de los cuatro fallase la volea más fácil que habrá fallado en toda su carrera. Para mí él no la falló, sino que fueron esas energías las que mandaron la pelota fuera. Eso nos dio alas, y conseguimos el punto de dobles. A continuación llegó la victoria en el punto decisivo, y con ello lo que nunca habíamos conseguido antes, el ganar una final jugando en campo contrario.

Nuestro “Plan B”, como la prensa española definió al equipo que llevamos, consiguió lo imposible. Con el tiempo, David, Feli y Fer han demostrado que son el pilar de este equipo, que son nuestro “Plan A”. Ellos lo dan todo por España y son los que, con su entrega, crean estas fuerzas especiales que tantos triunfos nos han dado a este país.  Además, aceptan que Rafa esté cuando puede y aporte ese extra. Son geniales.

Qué grato puede ser el deporte para el ganador, y qué cruel puede serlo para el perdedor. Argentina se quedó desolada; la imagen de aquel equipo en la cena imperativa posterior a la final era devastadora. Y todo porque esa volea voló unos centímetros de más. Las energías negativas les habían traicionado, el gran público les había crucificado, y la prensa fue durísima con editoriales punzantes directas al corazón. Habían perdido su gran oportunidad, y en aquella mesa estaba reflejado el gran pesar de todo un país. Habían recibido la lección de que, por muy favorito que seas, en deporte no se gana nunca antes de jugar. La gente de aquél país dejó solos a sus jugadores. En deporte, la crueldad de la derrota a menudo se convierte en soledad.

Afortunadamente, al pasar el tiempo el público olvida, y el deporte, que es generoso, te vuelve  a dar una oportunidad. El equipo argentino, que sigue gozando de buena materia prima, aprendió de aquella derrota y en estos años se ha unido. Llegan preparados y ahora tienen un objetivo común que va más allá de los egos de cada uno de ellos. ¿Podrán reescribir una nueva historia? ¿Podrán pasar de derrotados a héroes?

En Sevilla nosotros dispondremos de dos top ten, y ellos tres top 25 (aunque dos fueron top ten). Nuestros dos primeros compitieron la semana pasada en Londres, y van a tener muy pocos días para adaptarse de indoor a tierra. En cambio los argentinos no han jugado los torneos indoor para prepararse a conciencia en tierra durante más de un mes. Los mensajes desde el interior del equipo argentino son de humildad y de que tienen muchas ganas de luchar la batalla. ¿Todo esto no os recuerda al 2008? A mi sí. Una parte importante del partido en el 2008 la jugó la prensa, dando siempre la eliminatoria por ganada a los argentinos antes de la confrontación. Estos días, en varias de las entrevistas que me han hecho, me preguntaban cosas como si España ya habrá ganado 3-0 el sábado. Está claro que se parecen a los argentinos en el 2008.

Por suerte, los jugadores, sus técnicos y sobre todo el capitán español, son conscientes de la dificultad de esta eliminatoria y la están preparando a conciencia. Saben que hoy no hay un rival más difícil y competitivo que Argentina. Esta Argentina, curtida por su derrota anterior, sin la presión de tener que ganar, viene preparada y es peligrosísima. No nos demos por vencedores antes del partido, no cometamos su error. Nos espera una gran final, donde ganará el equipo que tenga el objetivo más claro, el que ponga más pasión, el que canalice mejor las energías, que son las que, en los momentos clave, hacen que la pelota caiga de un lado o del otro.

Let’s Not Make The Same Mistake As The Argentines

 The great Davis Cup final between Spain and Argentina is coming, which will be held in Sevilla. Spain is the great favorite, because it has won the last 20 confrontations that it has played at home. But as we know, favoritisms do not win matches, and the experience shows it, as it occurred with our Davis Cup victory in 2008, which for reasons that you probably know, I carry within my heart. At the end of that year, with the withdraw of Nadal, Argentina was more favorite than Spain is today. But the Argentineans were unable to join their energies and this betrayed them, while our energies not only were added up, they got multiplied. This resulted in that the differences in tennis level (their team had two top ten and we had three top 25) became leveled.

The beauty in sports is that it is almost always fair, as it was demonstrated in that final. In the key moments of the match, the fact that we were so ready for the battle, with all our energies merged, gave us the necessary confidence and the luck to, in the key point of the doubles match (and of the final), the best player of the four on the court missed the easiest volley he probably had in his entire career. In my opinion, he did not miss, it was all the energies that sent the ball out. This encouraged us and we obtained the doubles point. Victory came next in the decisive match, and we achieved something that we had never done before: to win a Davis Cup final playing away. 

Our “Plan B”, as the Spanish media named our team competing in that final, achieved the impossible. Over time, David, Feli and Fer have proved to be the cornerstones of the Spanish team; they are our “Plan A”. They always give their best for Spain and they are the ones who, with their eagerness, create those special forces that have provided so many titles to our country. Furthermore, they accept that Rafa is present when he can and adds that extra push. They are absolutely great.    

How satisfying the world of sport can be for the winner, and how cruel it can be for the one defeated! Argentina ended up devastated; the image of that team at the mandatory dinner after the final was dismal. And only because that crucial volley flew a few centimeters away. The negative energies betrayed them, the big audience crucified them, and the media was really tough with them with sharp hurting editorials aimed directed at the heart. They had lost their big chance, and that dinner table was the reflection of the great sorrow of an entire country. Argentina learned the lesson that, in spite of being the great favorite, in sports you never win before the match. Their own countrymen had abandoned them. In sports, the cruelty of the defeat often turns into loneliness. 

Fortunately, with the passing of time the audience forgets, and sport is generous when providing you with another opportunity. The Argentinean team, which continues to have good prime material, learned from that defeat and has in recent years become united. They come prepared and now have a common goal that goes beyond the egos of each team member. Will they be able to rewrite a new story? Will they be able to turn from defeated into heroes? 

In Seville we will have two top ten players, while they will have three top 25 (although two of them were top ten). Our first two players competed last week in London, and they will have just a few days to adapt from indoor to clay court. In contrast, the Argentineans have not play the indoor tournaments in order to focus in the clay court preparation for more than a month. The messages that the Argentinean team is transmitting are of humbleness and they are ready for the battle. Doesn’t all this remind you of 2008? To me it does. An important part of the game in 2008 was played by the media, always assuming victory for Argentina before the confrontation. These past few days, during some of the interviews I had, I was asked such things as if Spain will already win 3-0 on Saturday. The similarity with the Argentineans in 2008 is certainly clear.

 Fortunately, our players, their coaches, and further more the Spanish Captain, are aware of the difficulty of this final and they are preparing the confrontation thoroughly. They know that there isn’t a more difficult and competitive rival than Argentina today. This Argentina, toughened by its previous defeat and without the pressure to win, comes prepared and is very dangerous. Let’s not assume us as winners before the game. Let’s not make their mistake. It will be a great final, where the winner will be the team that has the clearest objective, puts the most passion, and channels its energies best. These are the things that, in the key moments of the game, determine if the ball falls on one side or the other.
